Ryan Agnew is an artist whose sincere investment in the present reflects itself in the art he produces, the questions he raises and the community he fosters with others. Born 1978 in Alexandria, Virginia, Agnew exhibits regularly and has been the recipient of several awards including a fellowship for emerging artists from The Ohio State University’s Arts Initiative in 2010 and an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in 2009. During the summer of 2010, he completed a residency with the Nonstop Institute in Yellow Springs, Ohio; the work he developed during this period reflects his interest in familial oral histories and their relationship to local stories and cycles in nature. Since 2009 Agnew has collaborated with others to run It Looks Like It’s Open, a shared studio space in Clintonville and a testing ground for experimental projects and events. Agnew’s oil and watercolor paintings use color and pattern to construct form and often represent light in the natural landscape. These paintings incorporate soft details and quiet restraint, inviting viewers to draw closer, to slow down, look deeply and connect to the world around us. Agnew also currently works with the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Ready to Read Corps and is father of twins, Tree and Lake.

After experiencing the rippling effects of my son’s childhood cancer diagnosis firsthand within my own family and witnessing it among other families that we met along the way, my vision in opening beYoga and Wellness was to create an atmosphere that was comforting and relaxing, where a person’s worries and stress would fall away shortly after walking through the door. At beYoga and Wellness we work to help create an environment where people can be present within their body, no matter their athletic ability, so that they may release their stress and worries through asana (poses) and breath awareness and leave feeling grounded, energized and balanced. We offer a range of Hatha based classes including Chronic Care, Beginner, All Levels, Prenatal and Restorative. – Jennifer Baryluk, BS, CYT

This is a recent testimonial we received, we really appreciated that they took the time to write this up (life can be too busy for such things). Certain testimonials are help people understand how acupuncture can be used (this was a really amazing recovery). Sometimes there are conditions that most people have no idea we can help with. Through personal stories, we can help get the information out there. If you have a story of how acupuncture has helped you, and you don’t mind sharing, we would be so appreciate! Also, if you have a google email address (or can log into a Google account like gmail or Adwords), we are “supposed” to be adding google reviews…(we are slowly learning how to do this marketing stuff). Any old email address can be used for Yelp reviews.
After the very first session, all the pain disappeared…
“Almost 4 years after completing chemotherapy I was still experiencing an intense amount of neuropathy in my feet. The feeling flowed from stinging needles to shooting pain. The pain was relentless and I had accepted that this was simply the way my life would be. I turned to many different things to help, then a friend recommended Urban Acupuncture Center. This place had a soothing effect as soon as I walked in. After the very first session, all the pain in my feet disappeared. This is no exaggeration and why I now recommend to others that acupuncture become their FIRST resort. “

A famous acupuncturist said: When you are young, you can cheat your body; when you are old, your body cheats you. We’ve all heard truisms along this vein which reflect the wisdom of a life lived. But, self-care can be a means to living longer and living better, because what’s the point of living long if you can’t be living well at the same time?
My Mom, like Ben Franklin, I believe, encouraged moderation in all things. And, I think that this is a useful way to look at the big picture. Your life, and, therefore, your body and mind, and even your Qi is an accumulated collective of everything that you have experienced and been exposed to. Your lifestyle habits – diet, exercise, sleep, stress relief, hobbies, medications, relationships, expression of emotions, the ability to create, your connection to the natural world – all have profound and direct effects on your experience as a human being in this material world as well as a spiritual entity in this universe.
Focus on your daily routine, the things you eat every day, the type of exercise you do, how engaged you are in your life and your job and in this very moment as a way to change and influence the course of your trajectory. You have the control unless you choose to give it away.
This is what the ’Acupuncture Lifestyle’ encompasses. Acupuncture needles adjust the functional energy of the human body to make it work as efficiently as it was designed. What this means is that you have the ability to aid it by nourishing your Qi or hinder it by wasting your Qi or using it all up without replenishing it. You can only cheat your body for so long before it begins to cheat you. Here’s to practicing what we all try to preach to others.
