Artist Spotlight: Ryan Agnew

Ryan Agnew is an artist whose sincere investment in the present reflects itself in the art he produces, the questions he raises and the community he fosters with others. Born 1978 in Alexandria, Virginia, Agnew exhibits regularly and has been the recipient of several awards including a fellowship for emerging artists from The Ohio State University’s Arts Initiative in 2010 and an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in 2009. During the summer of 2010, he completed a residency with the Nonstop Institute in Yellow Springs, Ohio; the work he developed during this period reflects his interest in familial oral histories and their relationship to local stories and cycles in nature. Since 2009 Agnew has collaborated with others to run It Looks Like It’s Open, a shared studio space in Clintonville and a testing ground for experimental projects and events. Agnew’s oil and watercolor paintings use color and pattern to construct form and often represent light in the natural landscape. These paintings incorporate soft details and quiet restraint, inviting viewers to draw closer, to slow down, look deeply and connect to the world around us. Agnew also currently works with the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Ready to Read Corps and is father of twins, Tree and Lake.

Artist Spotlight: Megan Capretta

Megan Capretta is a self taught artist whose work is diverse in technique, style and medium. Although primarily creating abstract and still life pieces, all of Megan’s work encompasses a unique value that inspires thought, interpretation and optimism.

Born in 1981, Megan was raised in Southern California until the age of 10 before her family moved to Columbus, Ohio. She moved to Akron, Ohio 15 years later where she currently resides with her husband Joe and their two sons, Gino and Angelo.

Although currently not practicing regularly, Megan is also an accomplished hair stylist specializing in innovative cutting technique and color application. Her consultative and unique approach to client satisfaction has afforded her the privilege of working with some of the same clients since 1999.

Whether she’s taking brush or spatula to canvas, welder or grinder to metal, scissor or color to hair, or paint to oversized tarp for her children’s next school play, the creative process and enjoyment others get from her work is Megan’s true inspiration; an inspiration that helps mask the chronic pain she suffers from daily, allowing her to benefit from the healing power that art provides.

Artist Spotlight: Frankie Lee

Inspirations for my work come to me as spontaneous images in my mind, and the natural beauty I see in the world. I combine the two on canvas, and a relationship takes place between reality and fiction. A war between letting go and being detailed occurs during my process.

What if we, as people on this earth, took more time to enjoy the world’s natural beauty and let go, just a little more, of things that keep us constrained and in categories? What if we chose to dream more, and instead of being discouraged by details, held onto the feeling of that dream coming true?

I only hope that my work can instill a feeling of tranquility and wonder to the viewer, encouraging the collision of fiction and reality.

All pieces are for sale.

It was my first summer in Columbus when I stumbled upon the lotus pond at Goodale Park. I didn’t realize that the same kind of lotus that I grew up with in Thailand could thrive in this midwestern climate. With camera in hand, I returned to the pond several times that summer to capture what felt so familiar to me, in my new home-turf.

I love the different shades of green, the geometric shapes, and the varied angles of a lotus plant’s life. In Buddhism, the lotus is a symbol of purity. It helps guide one to lead a simple, pure life.

The lotuses of Goodale park are long-gone now (they drenched the pond and installed a new fountain). I am thrilled to be able to share these captured moments that brought me a sense of home, and tranquility.

Kit Yoon is a licensed acupuncturist. She is often seen with a camera wherever she goes. She was born and raised in Thailand, educated in New England, enjoyed the California sand and sun for a decade. She now lives with her husband, two children, two chickens, a dog, and a bunny in Bexley, Ohio.
