The first time you receive an\u00a0acupuncture treatment, you might be\u00a0surprised by the sensations following each needle penetration. At first\u00a0you may feel nothing. A few seconds later, with a little more needle depth\u00a0and stimulation, your eyes widen and your body wakes up to an unfamiliar\u00a0<\/span>wave spreading at the local acupoint, or throughout your body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What you feel is what we consider the basis of Traditional Chinese\u00a0Medicine. It is what we as practitioners try to move, manipulate, nourish\u00a0or diminish, depending on your conditions or ailments. What you feel is a\u00a0rather complex entity, but is simply known as Qi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Pronounced ‘chee’, and often translated as ‘life force’, Qi is intangible\u00a0and invisible, and yet ubiquitous in all living beings. Chinese Medicine\u00a0divides Qi into several forms, some of which include Prenatal Qi,\u00a0Nourishing Qi, Defensive Qi, and Organ Qi. But we tend to group them up, and refer to Qi in general as your well-being, your energy, your life\u00a0force.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Qi is a unique concept to Chinese Medicine, but far from being unknown in\u00a0other cultures and practices. Qi is synonymous with\u00a0mana\u00a0to the\u00a0Hawaiians,\u00a0pneuma\u00a0to the Greeks.\u00a0And for yoga practitioners, Qi is\u00a0one and the same as\u00a0prana.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the body and mind are in balance, Qi flows freely. You feel nourished\u00a0and energized: you are healthy. When Qi is blocked, you may experience\u00a0aches and pain, depression and anxiety. When Qi is depleted, you may feel fatigue, or dis-ease.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Acupuncture, the placement of thin needles into specific therapeutic\u00a0points along the body’s meridians, works to re-direct your Qi towards\u00a0optimum health. Practitioners select certain points along the meridians\u00a0that best suit your needs. You may find that some acupuncture points\u00a0deliver more Qi sensations than others. It is not uncommon for you to experience an underlying vibration throughout your body during the\u00a0treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because acupuncture has been very beneficial in treating several health\u00a0conditions, the scientific community is curious about how it works.\u00a0Several studies have attempted to study the impact of acupuncture; some\u00a0studies have even tried to measure Qi. Many\u00a0studies agree that acupuncture does offer positive benefits,\u00a0from headaches to arthritis, anxiety to sciatica, among other conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some uncomplicated blocked Qi (i.e. jaw pain), patients often feel\u00a0less or no pain as soon as the acupuncture takes effect. As my teacher\u00a0reminded us over and over again: “Where there is blocked Qi, there is\u00a0pain. Where there is Qi flow, there is no pain.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Qi may always be that ethereal entity; only something that we can\u00a0feel, we could say it probably is associated with circulation, both of\u00a0lymphatic fluid and blood. In fact, because Qi is such an important part\u00a0<\/span>of all living things, it is fair to say that there is Qi in every part of\u00a0the body. Qi is truly the essence of life.<\/span><\/p>\n
