Patient Testimonial: Life After Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy-for-Breast-Cancer“Sometimes you don’t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” Georges Duhamel Almost 4 years after completing chemotherapy I was still experiencing an intense amount of neuropathy in my feet. I tried physical therapy, medications and exercise. The feeling in my feet flowed from stinging needles to shooting pain. The pain was relentless 24/7 and I had accepted that this was simply the way my life would be. As a LAST resort I decided to try acupuncture, after-all, the thought of anyone > sticking anything into me was not at all appealing.

A friend recommended Urban Acupuncture Center. This place had a soothing effect as soon as I walked in. It’s quiet, yet friendly and smells really good! The treatment room is calming with comfortable chairs, relaxing music quietly playing in the background and interesting artwork on the walls. After the very first session, all the pain in my feet disappeared. This is no exaggeration. I realize this might not be the result for everyone, but it was for me!

I was so amazed, and of course relieved, that I continued to go for weekly treatments. The sessions eventually focused on other aches and pains, my insatiable appetite and my sleepless nights and, of course my practitioner made whatever adjustments were needed to try to address my current issue. After one and a half years I thought that maybe I was “good to go” and even thought that maybe the acupuncture was really a placebo, where because I thought it was working, that it did. So I decided to take a break. I stopped going for approximately 5 weeks. It didn’t take long for my body to start to feel off-centered. By the end of 5 weeks I couldn’t wait to return.

The acupuncture brought me back to center because the acupuncture gives my body a focus of attention that nothing else does. I now recommend to people that acupuncture become their FIRST resort. I am grateful that the persistent moments of the aftermath of my chemotherapy is now a memory.

artist-frankie-lee-columbus-ohio-artInspirations for my work come to me as spontaneous images in my mind, and the natural beauty I see in the world. I combine the two on canvas, and a relationship takes place between reality and fiction. A war between letting go and being detailed occurs during my process.

artist-frankie-lee-columbus-ohio-arWhat if we, as people on this earth, took more time to enjoy the world’s natural beauty and let go, just a little more, of things that keep us constrained and in categories? What if we chose to dream more, and instead of being discouraged by details, held onto the feeling of that dream coming true?

I only hope that my work can instill a feeling of tranquility and wonder to the viewer, encouraging the collision of fiction and reality.

artMy abstract paintings are an emotive exploration discovered through a stream-of-consciousness process. I begin with an urge to paint a certain color or draw a particular shape. By adding layers of oil pigmented wax with pastels, fabric, twine, and paper, the surface becomes thick and textured. I impulsively rotate the panel’s orientation, allowing wax drips to mark each direction. Scraping the wax, I incise strong gestural marks, expose previous layers of color, and remove fused 3-dimensional objects leaving behind their imprints.

I am typically not present to the full nature of emotion I reveal during the actual process, as I work through intuition and less through critical approach. Whichever emotions I am describing, I am guided by a desire to create a painting which feels complete and balanced through form, line, movement, and color. This desire during the painting process reflects a typically human quest to experience balance and completeness in life.

megan gunsorekIncised lines, dripped wax, and traces of removed objects and layers underneath create a sense of emotional depth, history, and essence of time. The act of building and removing wax and objects parallels the experience of adding and subtracting in life- people, possessions, personality traits, and habits. Thus my paintings, revealed through a subconscious process, are a visual representation of my emotional history.

My figurative paintings and sculpture are often displayed in conjunction with my abstract as poetic installation. The dramatically emotive black and white palette of my figurative work is melodiously juxtaposed next to my chromatic abstracts.

Gunsorek studied painting at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and in Rome, Italy. She currently lives in Columbus, Ohio. See more art: http://megangunsorek.com
